User experience, graphic design and development of websites and web applications
Practical advice, experiments and ideas covering different UX/UI related subjects. Some of my recent posts:
for randomly timed emails containing UX and other interesting content from myself and around the web (not too many).
I started working in digital in 2000, when delivering interactivity and video on cd-rom was still cutting edge, and my mobile phone looked like the one in the picture.
Over the years I've been a website developer and graphic designer, flash programmer and animator, before settling on user experience design.
I’m interested in creating websites and applications people like to use while making their lives easier. I enjoy a wide range of tasks including researching user behaviour, writing micro copy to increase engagement, designing on-boarding steps, gathering and tying business goals to user needs, simplifying complex activities, designing and building prototypes, user testing and iterating designs.
I've worked on large self-serve online tools, websites and intranets for large companies and government agencies, apps for mobile and the web.
Outside of my full time job as a user experience designer, I used to take on a limited number of freelance jobs with the aim to keep my graphic design and coding skills fresh. It also exposed me to things I don't do in my day job like project management, branding and print.
The examples below are from my freelance work.
Ryallsmyth - I'm into my 3rd revision of ryallsmyth spanning approx. 7 years. The latest is a responsive, mobile and tablet friendly design giving the maximum amount of screen real estate to showing off their great architecture.
Here are some examples of other sites I've designed.
Sometimes I work with new businesses that need branding along with a website. Good branding can be a big asset to a business, and bad branding is hard to change after business cards and other collateral have been printed.
Some of the new businesses I've worked with needed business cards and marketing materials. It's great to actually be able to hold something you've designed.
Rush to it wanted business cards that stood out and gave a sense of urgency.
Walters Green and Carolyn Vickers both needed brochures to help their marketing efforts.
I'm based in Brisbane Australia, but am open to projects from anywhere.
